Balance is a key element of good interior design. As i ve been putting together the living room the design principle of balance has come forefront in my mind. Balancing the strong linear lines of the tv cabinet is the long sofa opposite while the two light grey chairs are balancing the window opposite. Asymmetrical balance is also called informal balance.

Symmetrical design themes make it easy for the brain to process the décor idea when someone walks into a room. With asymmetrical balance a middle point or range continues to be found but differing home furniture are being used to set up balance. This room like the last uses a central point from which to balance the asymmetrical design. Asymmetrical is a more relaxed less formal approach to balance in a room.

This asymmetrical fireplace above uses balance by the use of decorative objects either side of it to create harmony and stability in this living space. Every item you put in a room whether its a piece of furniture or a decorative accent has visual weight. So photos of the living room reveal to come soon. In the meantime i have an important design 101 principle to share today. It involves setting similar items in an area such as you would find on a dining room table. A room can be symmetrical where items are arranged to mirror one another on each side of the room.
